about

Written and performed by Robert Halcrow. Canterbury 2018-19.
Mastered by Ian Button and Robert Halcrow.

Robert Halcrow of Picturebox, District Repair Depot, FXU2, Papernut Cambridge and Twink collaborator. Solo tunes, lo-fi, UK, "the sort of thing you'd find in the soul, funk and disco section, upstairs in Boots, 1985."

"These songs started around the time of the TWINK "Brand New Morning" single and the 2nd FXU2 album in 2018, when I finally got a MIDI controller set up to work, thanks to Dave Hirst. Some of them could have been for FXU2 (the lo-fi, 80s r'n'b project I do with Jack Hayter and numerous friends) but they were too 60s/70s influenced (Sly/Parliament/Funkadelic/ The Meters. Aim high.), not 80s enough. ("Brand New Morning" began life as "Isley Bros" before it went somewhere completely different.)
MIDI meant I was able to use lots of sounds I was really after, like DX7, clavinet, old analog synths, as well as Rhythm Ace, 808 drum machine, synth bass sequencers and wah on the organ and guitar. Not the "wackawacka" funk cliche, more the single note, leady stuff (like on Sly's "Luv 'n' Haight" which knocked me sideways when I heard the reissued "There's A Riot Goin' On" aged 14).
I decided early on that I mustn't ask anyone else to play anything. If I couldn't find the sound or play it or fake it myself, it wouldn't go on the song. Finally, recently enjoying old tapes of Gary Byrd's Sweet Inspirations from mid-80s late night Radio 1 convinced me to get these songs out on home dubbed cassette.
I enjoyed making these songs. Hope you enjoy them too."
